Auteur theory
In film criticism, the 1950s-era auteur theory holds that a director's films reflect that director's personal creative vision, as if he or she were the primary "auteur" (the French word for "author"). In some cases, film producers are considered to have a similar "auteur" role for films that they have produced.

Politique des auteurs La politique des auteurs est un mouvement théorique de la critique cinématographique initié par François Truffaut dans les pages des cahiers du cinéma en Février 1955 dans son article Ali Baba et la "Politique des Auteurs".

Een auteur (auctor (Lat.) = schrijver) is de oorspronkelijke geestelijke eigenaar van een creatief werk. Meestal wordt er in het dagelijks spraakgebruik de schepper van een boek, bundel of artikel op het gebied van letterkunde, kunst, wetenschap of andere non-fictie mee bedoeld, kortom een schrijver of journalist. Maar ook heeft bijvoorbeeld elk muziekstuk een auteur: de componist of arrangeur. De term wordt ook in de filmwetenschap gebruikt om aan te geven dat een bepaalde regisseur een persoonlijk stempel weet te drukken op zijn films.

Le mot "auteur" est mieux connu du public dans le sens où l'entendent le droit de la propriété intellectuelle et le droit pénal. En droit civil le mot désigne la personne dont une autre tient un droit. Ainsi, le vendeur est l'auteur de l'acquéreur . Ce dernier est, de son côté, désigné sous le nom d'"ayant cause" ou encore d'"ayant droit" de l'auteur.
